NFB Clay Animation PSA's.

Hey everyone, okay so recently my CyberARTS class and I went downtown to the National Film Board (NFB). When we were there we got to use Clay Animation to make our Public Service Announcements (PSA). The first one is about Homophobia and the second is about Gender Discrimination. I personally thought that it was a very fun day and I learned a lot. My blog's been a little glitchy, so if you can't view this, click here for the same video on my friends blog. Okay, enjoy! :)

P.S.A. Analysis

Hey Everyone! To get started on our own Public Service Announcements, we found other P.S.A.’s on Youtube and analysed them! If you want to go straight to the Youtube link, click here. Alright, I know this is a little late, but I was having some trouble uploading this, sorry Miss! Hope you enjoy it anyways :)

1. What is the main focus of the video?

The main focus of this video is to get across the point of racism, and how it’s something that shouldn’t, but still goes on in today’s society, in schools, on the streets, basically everywhere.

2. Describe how the video gets this point across.

This video gets the point across with the white kids and the Muslim girl, and it clearly shows the way the white kids are treating her. Not only do they pay no attention to her in the hallways, but one of them knocks her books down only because her skin colour is different, which is wrong and disgusting. Then when the other kids don’t do anything about it, the Muslim girl feels discriminated against, and, well she hates it. When she goes to pick up her books, the girl that knocks her books down probably realized what it felt like to be her, and goes back and helps. This shows that it only takes one person to make a change; even if it’s only for one person, it creates a movement, and this movement can spread, not just through your school, maybe even locally, or better yet, globally. Imagine just one person everywhere standing up against racism; a powerful movement is created and suddenly everyone is involved. This video gave me the idea of a movement like this, and that is why I think it is so powerful in sending its message across.

3. What techniques are used in the video to help convince the viewer of the point of the video.

There are several techniques that make this video much more convincing than it would’ve been without them. I think one of the main ones was the way this was all filmed and edited in black and white, as soon as the first shot came on and one saw the colourless feet walking, the mood was set, and it stayed consistent throughout the whole video. The camera angles also contributed to how powerful this video was. For example, when the girl was picking up her books how the camera was looking down on her, to make the viewer feel like they were in the place of the white kids, and how they could change this. And then the last shot with the two girls straight on, you could see how they were equal, and that they aren’t really different after all, these were just a few of the camera angles that I thought were really cool, but there were many more. Thirdly, I thought the music was another successful contribution. It went well with what was happening, because it was very soft, sad music, helping again with the mood of the video.

Overall, I think this video was very effective, and it is one of my favourite P.S.A.’s yet.

Optical Devices

In seminar for CyberARTS we got to go on this neat website and learn more about Optical Devices. Here is my review of going on this website.
I like this toy the best because I like the use of the placement of writing. It is called a Thaumatrope and it works with a small disk on either sides of the circumference help by a several pieces of string. Two pictures are drawn on both sides of the disc, and when the disc spins, the two images appear to overlay each other one by one. To learn more, click here.
I enjoyed looking through this website because I learned a lot about different toys that are like art in the way that they can tell a story. It showed me that everything is related to art and everything has a message. I liked and disliked the format, this is because I found it very easy to find everything, but there wasn't anything that caught my eye. I think to improve this site, there should be something to draw attention and keep the reader engaged in the website.
Overall, I would recommend this site for anyone interested in learning more about optical toys. It is very helpful and it has valuable information.

Surrealism-Salvador Dali

Amulet

In CyberARTS we made amulets with a guest artist, I chose to use an earth and drama masks.
First we did a sketch of what we thought the amulet would look like in the end, then we did a plasticine model of them, finally we carved out the cuddle bone and poured the metal into it. After filing and polishing, we came out with the finished product.

Chess Piece

Imagine this, you’re sitting at your computer, on a word document, and well…you have nothing written down. Well basically, that’s how I manage to come up with great openings, but this time it didn’t really work out as well as I hoped. I am now going to touch upon on my above chess piece. Enjoy ☺
For this assignment, we were to create a chess piece that looked as life like as possible, really looking at the little details and finding the light patterns. The shading was to be exact and precise. Once we were done with that, the background was a matter of pattern, rhythm and balance with line.
First, I’ll start with the chess piece. I think that my pawn came out as an acceptable piece. I looked carefully at the lighting patterns and I think that the shading was quite close to the original. If there was one thing that I would change it would be the way the pawn doesn’t look angled correctly. I would change this because it makes the piece look much more unrealistic and therefore it isn’t as extraordinary as it can be.
In the background I thought that these lines were appropriate with the pawn. Although when played correctly, the pawn can be a strong player, I think the way most people look at it, it is weaker and therefore shouldn’t be resembled as a strong, authoritative piece. This background shows that it is important (by how it pops) but that at the same time it is still looked down on (there is no real story in the background about the pawn).
I created balance in the backdrop by using darker lines for the circles on the top left part of the page and using more of a grey for the lines on the centre/bottom right side, where the chess piece is. I think that the use of repeating different types of line created an interesting pattern; it wasn’t too much to take the critique’s eyes away from the actual chess piece. If there was one thing I would change it would be to make more of a story using the background. I feel that I had the potential to make this project much more intricate and appealing.
Ultimately, I think that this piece worked out very well in the end. I like the way I used the black line through the middle to create rhythm, balance and separation. Now I thought about a creative ending as well, but nothing comes to mind, so I hope you liked my chess piece. ☺

Picnik

http://www.picnik.com/app#/home/welcome

Picnik is another photo sharing site that I have found. I think that it is very useful because you can personally edit your pictures and make cool collages and save them as j peg's to use whenever. It is also great because you can connect to other websites and get your pictures right off of them (e.g. Flickr, Facebook, etc.) I think that it can be used for certain things that you cannot do on Flickr or VuVox, but at the same time Flickr and VuVox are better for slide shows, so I think that I like all of the websites. As far as recommending goes, I would recommend Flickr or VuVox more for having a journalism aspect, but more for editig photos into a collage, I would recommend Picnik.

Kassy's and Jessica's Compostition in Photography Assignment.

For our composition in photography assignment, our compositional elements were Camera Angle and Light&Shadow.

Camera Angle
When using a camera and trying to get a professional looking photo as possible, a key aspect is the use of the way the camera is positioned. This is called the Camera Angle. For example, if you want a person to look more intimidating, you would not shoot from a higher angle, looking down. You would most likely have a closer growing view of the person.
http://www.photography.ca/Forums/attachments/f13/3354d1243911933-june-2009-photography-assignment-shooting-low-angle-p-o-v-victory-1.jpg
In this photo, the camera angle is very effective in trying to make this statue more intimidating (Low Angle).

In this photograph, the angle is directly center, showing more detail and giving off a more straight forward view of this photo (close up).

Light and Shadow
Another imperative characteristic in photography is the lighting. Without enough light, you won’t be able to see all f the details that you may want to. But if you have too much lighting, the piece will look to blown out. Depending on what mood you want for the picture, the lighting and shadows will contribute greatly.
For example, if you want a scarier photo for a Halloween poster, the lighting needs to be fairly dark in some places but the contrast needs to be higher, giving a more dramatic outcome.

http://www.digitalphotographysuccess.com/images/NewSalesletter/MP900178460%5B1%5D.jpg

The lighting in this shot is much better for a calming and cooler effect. It has enough lighting to show all the details and the shadows. But at the same time there isn't too much lighting that it's blown out.

Hey Look! I see logos.

For my Logo Design Assignment I decided to do a company that does book design. My company will choose the layout of the pages of the book and the cover of the book according to what we see will suit the book best. The personality of my company is very professional, refined and intelligent. We are reliable and knowledgeable, and we get the work done. Although we are the ones choosing the layout, cover, and such, we still take the book genre into consideration when choosing these. For example, if the book is a romance novel, we will know that it is a Romance novel and what it’s about before designing the book.
For my animal, I decided a Panda Bear works very well. I chose a Panda because it represents knowledge and spirituality. Panda Bears are cute and cuddly but they are still strong both mentally and physically. I thought that a Panda would represent my company well because they show knowledge and it will give the impression that what needs to get done will get done.
My pictorial logo turned out to be very simple but at the same time pleasing to look at. For the colour solution, I chose purple, because purple represents wisdom, which I thought would suit my company. I think that my pictorial is satisfactory, but I don’t think that it is my best logo.
I personally think that the black and white typographic logo works the best because it works well enlarged and shrunken down (e.g. on a business card). Also, it is nifty to look at because of the way the letters are set up. I also just like this one because of the simplicity of it, it isn’t to hard to look at and it’s memorable. If someone looks at it even for a little while and then they see it again somewhere it will be familiar to them.
In the combination logo, I used the same pictorial version, but for the words, I used different lettering. I used more or less the same fonts, but the layout was different. I did this because I thought the original typographic logo mixed with the pictorial logo would be to detailed and it would be difficult to look at, so I had a different layout of the words done. I don’t think that this logo works as well as it could, and if I would change anything it would be changing the way the picture is much bigger than the words, I would change this because when you make it small (e.g. on a business card) the lettering will not show up as it should, so I think that this logo is not as effective as the Pictorial and the Typographic one.
For all of these logos, I tried to represent knowledge and creativity, I did this using the Panda and the different lettering and the way they were set up. I think that the black and white typographic works the best and if I were to choose one for a logo I would choose that one.

The Third Class Carrige by Daumier

For seminar today, Miss took a picture of the charcoal drawing we did of 'The Third Class Carriage" by Daumier. We were told to edit the picture in Photoshop, by making it Greyscale, cropping it, and adjusting the Brightness and Contrast. This is what I have done with the photo.

Proposal for Logo

Name(s) of Company: 1.) Green Feather
2.) Ailuropoda melanoleuca ( panda in latin)
3.)jessicapatel Book Publishing

What kind of Company are you?
I am creating a company that does book design, I choose the cover of the book and the layout of the pages inside.

Style/Personality:
My company is going to be very professional and having refined taste, but at the same time, we are very reliable and knowledgeable. We will get whatever needs to be done, done. Although we are the Book Designers, we will go by the theme of the book (e.g. Children's book, Romance, etc.).

Animal:
Panda Bear

Characteristics: Panda Bears are known to represent knowledge, they are cute and cuddly but at the same time they are very strong mentally and physically. I thought that this would be a good animal for my company because it shows knowledge and that what needs to get done will get done.

Art Critique-"Sloop Nassau" by Homer

Hey world, for a CyberARTS assignment, we were told to write an Art Critique. For my choice of painting, I chose "Sloop, Nassau" by Homer. I chose this painting because I felt very calm when I saw it, and I felt the water colour portrayed the painting perfectly. For this critique, I will be describing the Imitationalist, Formalist, and Emotionalist qualities.

Imitationalism:
This painting looks very real, one can clearly see the scenery the artist is trying to show. The boat, the water, the land and the cloudy sky are all shown with enough detail that the interpreter knows exactly what it is. One can see the canoe attached to the sailboat and the people on the boat. Overall, the painting is shown in great detail, which makes it very easy to tell what the artist wants to show.

Formalism:
The artist of this painting has used the elements and principles of design in an intriguing way. When one first lays eyes on this painting, they are immediately drawn to the center where the sailboat is, this is because it is the focal point and it contrasts with the rest of the painting. The boat is mostly white, but when one sees he rest of the painting, there are more light colours here and there, creating balance. The colours on this painting are all cool colours, this creates balance and unity because it makes the painting fit together as a whole. In conclusion, this painting has all the elements and principles of design and uses them very well.

Emotionalism:
When looking at this piece of art, I feel very relaxed and serene, because whenever I'm by waves/water, I feel very laid back, like nothing in the world matters anymore. This is expressed with the way the lines create movement in this painting.

Rhythm Assignment

These pieces work in different ways because one gives the effect of more movement than the other. The 2nd piece creates more of an illusion than the first one; this is because of where the lines are placed and the thicknesses of them. In the first one, it seems like a very bold rhythm, because the lines are thicker. With the second one, you can see a more steady rhythm, one where you know more about what’s happening. I believe that both of these pieces work in their own way, but the second one, I believe has more of an illusion effect, which is something that most people would enjoy more than the first piece. However, despite this they are still both pleasing to the eye.
